BBC viewers have been left scratching their heads after mistakenly believing Johnny Vegas has been commentating on the gymnastics at the Olympics.
The 2024 Paris Olympics games are currently underway, with the gymnastics events kicking off a few days ago.
While most of the attention has been focused on the return of Simone Biles, those watching on at home were left slightly distracted by the voice they’ve been hearing during the national broadcaster’s coverage.
After having represented England over 100 times in various international gymnastic competitions, including at Olympic and Commonwealth Games, Craig Heap went on to commentate the sport for the BBC.
However, the 51-year-old’s accent has left many wondering if comedian Johnny Vegas, 53, has been moonlighting as a gymnastics expert.
The men, who are both from Lancashire, have been confusing some due to their similar accents.
‘Is Johnny Vegas commenting on the women’s gymnastics?’ Leigh posted on X.
‘Gymnastics commentator sounds disconcertingly like Johnny Vegas,’ Henry shared.
‘Is Johnny Vegas commentating on the parallel bars?’ Clem questioned.
Although many had a case of mistaken identity, it’s not the first time this has happened.
During coverage of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, BBC viewers were also left wondering if the comedian was pursuing a career change, with one person convinced it was him.
‘Can’t take the women’s gymnastics final seriously with Johnny Vegas co-commentating on the BBC #Tokyo2020,’ they wrote.
