The first trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s ‘spell-binding’ new horror film has been released, and it already boasts a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The acclaimed director, who blessed us with Magic Mike, the Ocean’s Eleven franchise and Erin Brockovich, is behind haunted house thriller Presence.

The flick, starring Lucy Liu and Julia Fox, premiered at Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of the year, ahead of the official release slated for January 24, 2025.

Very little is known about the movie, which follows a family moving into a new home but realizing that they are not alone in the house, with a sinister ‘presence’ also inhabiting the space.

We haven’t even had a chance to calm down after Longlegs and Steven has arrived to turned the genre on its head once again – he framed the movie from the perspective of the ghost, leading to a hair-raising cinema experience.

A brief teaser was released today, simply showing a camera zooming out from the driveway below, panning up through the window and around the room.

The 49-second clip was set to chilling music, but shared no further hints over what we can expect when the scare-fest drops in cinemas next year.

The official synopsis reads: ‘A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone.’

Although we still have a long wait for the release, reviews have poured in on Rotten Tomatoes and many critics have heaped praise on Steven’s latest efforts.

Meagan Navarro from Bloody Disgusting commended: ‘Presence pulls you in, terrifies you, then leaves your heart on the floor.

‘This ghost story doesn’t scare in the conventional sense, but it’s an innovative and grim nail-biter with more on its mind than the logline suggests.’

Bilge Ebiri of Vulture agreed: ‘It’s an art film that also works as a spellbinding horror film, and it might be the best thing Soderbergh has done in ages.’

‘Shot entirely from the first-person perspective of a haunting spirit, the slow-burn thriller might have collapsed in less experienced hands, but Soderbergh expertly puts a terrific ensemble through their paces,’ the Financial Times’ Nicolas Rapold posted.

ScreenRant’s Brittany Patrice Witherspoon wrote: ‘Without relying on cheap jump scares, Soderberg’s psychological thriller is a shattering mystery about instinct that will send chills down your spine.’

As Tomris Laffly from Harper’s Bazaar added: ‘Chilling in its freewheeling camerawork and unexpectedly heartbreaking, Soderbergh’s latest takes us back to the timeless cinematic basics of sad ghosts with unfinished business and delivers something formally fresh that renews the supernatural genre.’

Presence is in select cinemas on January 17, 2025, before an official release on January 24.
