It’s almost time to bid farewell to Fortnite’s current season as Epic Games prepares to re-shape the game around a brand new theme.

Players have spotted a mysterious timer on the Fortnite Island, indicating that a massive change is underfoot.

What does it all mean and what will the game’s new iteration look like?

Here’s all the essential information on Fortnite Chapter 5, Season 4.

When is Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 4 coming out?

Hot on the heels of Fortnite’s latest update, which brought fast travel to Lego Fortnite, Epic Games has announced when the multiplayer game’s current season (known as “Wrecked”) will conclude.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3 will end on August 15 at 11 PM ET, Epic has revealed. Due to the time difference between the UK and the US east coast, that equates to an early morning end time of 5am on August 16 for Brits.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 4 should therefore kick off a few hours later on August 16 for everyone, following downtime for the game.

How long will Fortnite be down for?

Fortnite will be unplayable during this time because its servers will be taken offline.

Let’s hope the update doesn’t take as long to implement as it did at the start of Chapter 5, Season 2 in March — when the game went down for almost 18 hours. Last time, the lights were out for a more bearable five hours.

What is the new season about?

Building on the record-breaking success of Fortnite OG, which saw the return of the classic Chapter 1 map from 2018, the game’s next season is also primed to be an epic throwback.

Chapter 5 Season 4 is rumoured to revolve around Marvel’s superheroes, who are poised to return to the game two years after their previous crossover.

Potty-mouthed anti-heroes Deadpool and Wolverine recently appeared in the Fortnite Shop, adding more fuel to the fire.

The leaks came after Marvel owner Disney’s mega-investment in Epic Games. Earlier this year, the media giant bought a $1.5 billion stake in the developer. It promised to create a new games and entertainment universe in Fortnite featuring its biggest properties, from Star Wars to Avatar.

As part of that partnership, Fortnite will host a livestream of Disney’s upcoming Horizons Live fan event on August 11, where we could learn more about collaborations including Chapter 5, Season 4.

The possibility of a Marvel-themed season was originally teased in a leaked Fortnite roadmap earlier this year, which featured a grainy image of Dr. Doom.

One of the earliest Marvel supervillains, Dr. Doom (whose real name is Victor Von Doom) is an arch nemesis of Marvel’s first family, the Fantastic Four, returning to the big screen in July 2025.

What about that timer?

As for that timer that just popped up on the Fortnite Island, players are convinced it points to the start of a new mini-event.

You can find the holographic countdown in Brutal Beachhead, which ends on August 10 at 7pm in the UK.

While Epic hasn’t confirmed what it all means, data miners have unearthed some clues about the new addition to the island. Of course, they reckon it’s connected to Season 4, but exactly how remains to be seen.

As in the past, it could lead to some map change, possibly revolving around Redline Rig, which seems ready to explode, according to a post on the FortniteLeaks subreddit.

Another dataminer provided a close-up render of the map showing that the explosive item is Pandora’s Box, which appeared before Chapter 5, Season 2 in early March.
