Literally a fan’s dram (Lego)

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas has been recreated in Lego form, with an amazing new set by a British creator.

There aren’t many films that can double as both a Halloween and Christmas movie, and still entertain the whole family, but 31 years later and The Nightmare Before Christmas is still a firm favourite around the world.

Its angular art style is not something that lends itself naturally to Lego (although the stop motion animation certainly is) so perhaps it’s not a surprise it’s taken this long to see an official set, but now it’s here the recreation of Halloween Town looks amazing.

The set is a Lego Ideas design, which means that it was originally a fan creation, before it was voted to become an official Lego set, where the original creator gets a small percentage of the profits. And it seems like that reward will be well earned, considering how things have turned out.

In this case, the designer was a British fan called Simon Scott, who posted his initial creation on the Lego Ideas website, where it was voted on by fans. Once any set gets over 10,000 votes Lego then considers it for a commerical release and that’s how the Nightmare Before Christmas set came to be.

The set’s composed of three main sections: Spiral Hill, Jack Skellington’s house, and Halloween Town Hall. There’s also eight characters included: Jack Skellington, Sally, Santa Claus (aka Sandy Claws), Zero the dog, The Mayor, and Lock, Shock, and Barrel.

An agreeably motely line-up (Lego)

The literally two-faced mayor is brick-built, in order to get his cone-like shape right, while Jack uses the extra long legs originally created for Avatar minifigures.

All the houses have interiors, so there’s a removable roof that shows Jack trying to create his Christmas formula, and a walking bathtub to contain the kidnapped Santa.

Spiral Hill is unusual not just because of its shape but because the moon behind it is made of card, which is a rare feature for Lego, while there’s a detailed graveyard beneath.

Jack’s house has all the weird angles from the movie, which are very difficult to replicate in Lego, while the Town Hall has the bubbling green water feature and the lectern from which Jack delivers his impassioned speech.

With each building laid out next to each other, the whole set measures 48.2cm wide, 27.8cm long, and 31.2cm tall. It’s made up of 2,193 Lego pieces and will cost £169.99 in the UK.

The set will be released on September 6 via the Lego website and physical stores, although if you’re a Lego Insider (which only requires a free sign-up here) you can get it from September 3.
