Eric Bischoff has swapped the world of wrestling for ‘cold calling’ in a surprising career change.
The former professional wrestling promoter, 69, is best known for his time running World Championship Wrestling (WCW) before joining WWE as an on-screen character in 2002 after the latter bought out its rival.
While he still dips his toe into sports entertainment through his 83 Weeks on Conrad Thompson’s podcast network, Eric has joined his friend in the world of mortgages.
For the past three years, the outspoken figure has been licensed as a mortgage loan officer through his pal’s Save With Conrad company.
‘Similarly to the way I got involved in the wrestling business, it was very much a coincidence,’ he told Sports Illustrated.
‘After spending 25 years on the road, I made up my mind that I wanted to spend more time at home. Getting into the mortgage industry also allows me to help people, and I don’t have to travel far to do it.’
After seeing first hand how much money Conrad had helped him save, the WWE Hall of Famer wanted to try to do the same for others.
‘I was surprised. There’s a class involved, a test you need to pass that has a high failure rate, and a lot of people give up when they realise what it entails,’ Conrad added.
‘To my surprise, Eric took the class on his own, scheduled the test, and got licensed. He didn’t want anyone to know; he just wanted to learn. I think he loved the idea of helping people. It’s been a way for him to give back to wrestling fans, too.’
A lot of Eric’s customers are people who have heard adverts on Conrad’s shows, and are already aware of his legacy in the wrestling business.
‘Wrestling comes up quite a bit on my calls. It’s almost allowed me to extend my wrestling career,’ he said. ‘They’re familiar with me. They’re excited to get a call from me. I’m excited to help them.’
And Eric is delighted to be working in an environment that truly helps people, while they’re ‘already excited to speak’ when he first makes contact.
