We’re heading back to Albion, sort of (22Cans)

After ‘messing around on mobile’, Fable creator Peter Molyneux is back with a new open world god game which combines his biggest hits.

Peter Molyneux was once regarded as one of the most influential game creators of all time, following titles like Populous and Black & White which pioneered the god game genre.

His reputation since has taken several knocks, between false promises around mobile app Curiosity: What’s Inside The Cube?, his crowdfunded flop Godus which was delisted from Steam last year, and his involvement with a bizarre NFT game named Legacy.

Molyneux has now revealed a new project for consoles and PC titled Masters Of Albion, which takes elements from his previous work, specifically Dungeon Keeper, Black And White, and Fable.

Taking to the stage during Gamescom Opening Night Live, Molyneux said: ‘After messing around on mobile – what the hell was I doing? I thought to myself I need to come home. I need to come home to PC and console.’

Masters Of Albion is described as an open world god game, where you build up your town within Albion during the day – customising citizens and buildings – before taking on creatures like zombies and werewolves that attack at night.

‘Navigate your way through intrigue and plot – kings come and go, lords shake you by the hand then stab you in the back, and the people work like dogs and are treated no better,’ reads the game’s description on Steam.

‘Gifted god like, ancient powers, you face an enemy the likes of which have not been seen in hundreds of years. Magic is returning to the hills and halls of Albion, threatening to tear down the very foundations of society. Unravel the mystery of the mages, defeat the enemy that lurks in the night and conquer a sorcery that could kill us all.’

Masters Of Albion is entirely self-funded and is being developed by his studio, 22Cans, alongside a number of people who worked on Dungeon Keeper, Black and White, and Fable, including Media Molecule co-founders Mark Healey and Kareem Ettouney.

While it’s set in Albion, the same name for the setting in Fable, Molyneux was slightly wishy-washy when asked if it’s the same location during an interview with IGN.

‘So Albion is the old English name for England and Wales and Cornwall,’ he said. ‘And I think it’s a really interesting world. It’s an interesting universe that Fable touched upon and really I think Albion in Masters Of Albion, it extends and expands that, but it’s not actually Fable 5 or anything like that.’

Molyneux later states Albion will be ‘familiar’ to Fable players, but it sounds like it will have some differences. ‘Albion is like saying if you set a game in America, you can’t set any other game in America. So Albion can’t be copyrighted. It’s the name for England and Wales and that’s how we get away with it.’

Following his recent history, any new project from Molyneux will be met with some healthy scepticism, but it sounds like he’s aligning himself with the right people at least.

Masters Of Albion currently has no release date, but it is available to wishlist on Steam.
