Lego Lemmy is the stuff of nightmares (Lego)

New Mario Kart Lego sets will launch next year, although they’re not exactly suited to those looking for a display piece.

After the collaboration was teased earlier this year, Lego has debuted six new Super Mario Kart sets during Gamescom.

Lego has released a range of Nintendo-themed sets over the years, between those aimed at adults like the brick-built NES and the kid-orientated Super Mario line designed around minifigures which can interact with certain Lego pieces.

The new Mario Kart sets fall into the latter category but that means they are more affordable, with prices ranging between £12.99 to £69.99.

The six new sets feature new Mushroom Kingdom minifigures, including Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach, a blue Yoshi, Toad, Donkey Kong, and Lemmy. If you own the Mario, Luigi, and Peach minifigures already, these can also be used to interact with the Mario Kart sets.

If you place a minifigure in the driver’s seat, Mario Kart audio and visual effects for ‘race-starting, horn-honking, kart-drifting, and gliding’ will play. There’s also some interactivity with the item boxes, which you can scan to collect extra coins.

The cheapest set is the Yoshi bike set at £12.99, designed for ages 7 and up. It includes a Yoshi minifigure, a shell item and a brick-built bike.

Other sets are the Standard Kart at £17.99, which includes Mario’s classic kart, a detachable glider, a Toad figurine and a workstation. There’s some other unique karts highlighted in the range too, namely Donkey Kong’s DK Jumbo and the B Dasher from Mario Kart DS.

The most expensive set, priced at £69.99, is Baby Peach and Grand Prix, which comes with Baby Peach in a Wiggler kart, Lemmy in the Landship kart, Toad on a bike, along with a classic Mario Kart starting gate. You can check out more information on the official site.

These are set to launch on January 1, 2025 alongside three new Lego Animal Crossing sets, named Stargazing with Celeste, Leif’s Caravan and Garden Shop, and Able Sisters Clothing Shop. These are priced at £8.99, £24.99, and £34.99 respectively.

Lego’s crossover with Animal Crossing suggests we could see more Nintendo properties outside of Mario given the brick treatment soon, with some hoping for confirmation on a previously leaked Zelda set.

While Mario-themed Lego sets haven’t usually been tied to new games, the follow-up to Mario Kart 8 has been rumoured to be in the works for years – so could 2025 finally be the time for Mario Kart 9? With Nintendo’s next console presumably out next year, it’s certainly a possibility.
