Rivers_gg can’t believe the hate she’s getting after winning Streamer of the Year (Twitch)

Streamer of the Year winner Rivers has revealed she received death threats, after Asmongold dismissed her as being a ‘diversity pick’.

Asmongold has had his fair share of controversy during his many years of broadcasting on Twitch, coming under fire earlier this year for saying artists’ opinion don’t matter, when discussing if the use of AI in Palworld is acceptable or not.

Now he’s being criticised by fans for saying Rivers_gg only won Streamer of the Year, ahead of content creators such as Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed, ‘because she’s a woman’.

Rivers has revealed that she has received death threats after her win, as she took to social media to call out ‘how sh**** people can be’.

Rivers is a female content creator from Mexico, who started on YouTube before branching out to streaming on Twitch in 2022, where she plays video games and does content in real life with her 6.3 million followers.

This weekend she won Streamer of the Year at the Esports Awards, beating nominees Kai Cenat, IShowSpeed, and xQc. The award is intended to honour ‘the most distinguished streamer who has raised the standards of streaming across the globe over the past 12 months.’

‘I’m salty because it was obviously a diversity pick because she’s a woman, and everybody knows it. It should’ve been Speed or Kai, or Caseoh, or like three other people,’ said Asmongold.

‘You put her up there because she’s a female. It’s embarrassing, it’s patronising. She’s not even a top female streamer either. It’s bulls***.’

Asmongold probably didn’t consider that the award was solely voted on by fans (Twitch)

Over on Reddit fans are firing back, with Reiofhope saying:

‘She’s one of the biggest Spanish speaking influencers. Kept getting bigger through Ibai’s boxing event and King’s League, which is also huge. She plays everything from Minecraft to Call Of Duty, every LATAM [Latin American] streamer knows her.’

‘Latin American Twitch is huge. Asmond’s small, insane perspective shows more and more every clip,’ says Ace O.

Many also pointed out that the nominees at the Esports Awards are 100% voted on by fans, and her viewers simply managed to pip everyone else.

That’s no surprise, as Rivers not only has 6.3 million followers on Twitch, but she has a huge 6.8 million following on Instagram, 5.5 million on Twitter, and 4.2 million subscribers on YouTube.

On Twitch, Rivers is the third most followed female streamer, ahead of Amouranth and IronMouse, and only beaten by Pokimane and AriGameplays.

In the aftermath, Rivers responded to the negativity over her win:

‘It impresses and scares me how sh**** people can be with someone, without thinking about how that person will feel, and without even knowing them or speaking their language.

‘People that I admired are now throwing s*** at me for something that I did not ask for. Sorry to the Speed and Kai’s communities but it was not my fault.’
