Crytek is in Crysis over a leak (Crytek)

Gameplay footage from an unannounced Crysis battle royale shooter has made its way online, which was codenamed Crysis Next.

Before Crytek announced it was developing Crysis 4 in 2022, the studio was said to be working on an online multiplayer spin-off codenamed Crysis Next.

This rumour stemmed from leaked documents in 2020, which described Crysis Next as a ‘free-to-play battle royale game where 100s of players collide’. Despite the leak though, Crytek never officially announced Crysis Next.

Footage of the project has now made its way online four years later, which shows the third person shooter in action, albeit in a very early form.

Crytek has already managed to take down a lot of the footage, with many videos now displaying a copyright claim by the company. Some, however, are still live at the time of writing.

The copyright claims confirm the footage is legitimate, although it’s very likely the project was cancelled considering the studio is now working on Crysis 4.

Based on the clips though, it doesn’t exactly look promising for a studio known for its graphically intense first person shooters. If you’ve played Fortnite or PUBG: Battlegrounds, the footage is exactly what you’d expect a Crysis take on the genre to look like, complete with customisable nanosuit loadouts.

The developer has some history with competitive shooters though, mainly 2019’s Hunt: Showdown which even featured a battle royale-inspired mode.

Crytek has not shared any updates on Crysis 4 since it was announced over two years ago. It was described as being ‘in the early stages of development’ at the time, with the team stating it will be ‘a while yet’ before it is released.

The last instalment in the series was 2013’s Crysis 3, which was sales flop for publisher Electronic Arts. Since then, Crytek has released remastered versions of all three titles in a trilogy compilation.
