From headlining Glastonbury, to a world tour, to busking in Ireland – there’s truly nowhere Coldplay hasn’t performed.

At 8pm on Wednesday, August 28, the busiest street in Dublin was brought to a halt as fans were told ‘something’ was about to happen.

Shoppers on Grafton Street were shocked and mildly freaked out when Chris Martin appeared in the middle of the huge gathered crowds to perform an impromptu set with some special guests.

The 47-year-old singer was joined by rappers such as Little Simz and Burna Boy for a performance of their new song We Pray for the bustling crowd.

Coldplay is in Dublin currently as part of their record-breaking Music Of The Spheres World Tour, performing at Croke Park over the weekend.

However, fans quickly realised this short set was not a greatest hits moment, instead, they found themselves listening to Coldplay’s newest track on repeat.

Ahead of the reveal, @ItsMatthewJoyce had written on X: ‘Something’s about to happen on Dublin’s Grafton Street… Rumour mill is Coldplay about to play 👀’

They then followed up with a disappointed note, which read: ‘Looks like Chris Martin is recording a music video here, playing the same song multiple times :/.’

‘Coldplay came on Grafton St played one song 5 times and DIPPED,’ added @dieatribes.

User PopCultPod joked: ‘People standing around to hear Chris Martin sing the same Coldplay song three times on Grafton Street.’

Fans were also deeply concerned that Chris appeared to be going barefoot on the street for some unknown reason.

Girlalicebeen dubbed the Yellow hitmaker ‘brave’ for ‘getting his toes out on Grafton Street’.

‘Newfound respect for Chris Martin,’ added @gillMcG.’Going barefoot on Grafton Street is brave!’

@Chazelena warned it was ‘not a good idea sir’ while swiftlydynasty joked: ‘jeezus put some shoes on.’

The surprise performance did have some fans though as people said they were ‘shaking’ from being so close to Chris.

Others were sad to discover they had missed this rare opportunity to see Coldplay perform for free — even if the setlist was a little limited.

However, there was a reason the group sang We Pray so many times… they were actually filming the music video.

The footage shot in Dublin will be part of the video which is set to debut on the band’s official TikTok at a later date.

Coldplay will headline Croke Park for four nights this weekend — Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday — before heading on break before their Australian gigs in October.
