Matt Baker has dropped a big hint that he could be returning to The One Show following Jermaine Jenas' sacking.

The 46-year-old presenter was the face of the BBC show alongside Alex Jones for a whopping nine years before he quit back in 2020 because he feared he'd 'be on the show forever'.

Yet now, with an empty spot on the show's famed green sofa, the former host could be considering a comeback.

Jermaine was dropped from his presenting roles on The One Show and the broadcaster's flagship football show last month for sending 'inappropriate' text messages after junior staffers raised concerns over his behaviour.

Speaking to The Sun about whether he'd consider stepping in to fill the gap, Matt shared: 'Who knows, who knows at the moment, I've not had any conversations with anybody, but like I say it's a show that I still absolutely love.'

He added: 'I spent nine years of my life dedicated to it and it's a show that's very close to my heart. It's a family and you never leave the family.'

MailOnline has contacted Matt's representatives for comment.

When Matt left the show four years ago, he was briefly replaced by Ronan Keating, before Jermaine and Roman Kemp took over.

Talking about her own future on The One Show this week, Alex Jones told Fearne Cotton on her Happy Place podcast: 'I can't believe I'm still here. I just go in, do the job and hope no one notices I'm still there. I just love it.

'People ask a lot: 'What do you want to do next? Don't you want to do a big entertainment show?' I'm like: 'What do you mean?' I'm really happy.'

She went on to admit she has no plans to leave for any entertainment projects and is happy hosting The One Show as it 'provide security for her children'.

She continued: 'All new projects are exciting and a new challenge but actually it would be really amiss of anybody to overlook the bread and butter.

'All the extra bits are really fun and exciting but actually for me longevity is key. I want to be there. Being the main breadwinner, I want to be able to provide security for the children.'

Meanwhile, Jermaine is now said to be 'in a state' as he fears for the future of his marriage with his wife of 13 years, Ellie Penfold.

Dennis Genas, the father of the 41-year-old ex-England, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, now says that he is trying to hold his family together after his actions tore them apart.

The football coach, 63, told The Mirror: 'He's battling to save his marriage. It's hit the family hard at the end of the day. He knows he shouldn't have done what he did and he wants to keep his family together and he knows he has hurt his wife and kids.'

Jermaine, who has three children with Ellie and another teenage daughter from an early relationship, revealed earlier this week that his wife has not yet told him whether their marriage can last.

The former footballer previously told his former female colleagues he is 'genuinely sorry' for sending inappropriate messages – issuing a direct apology after being allegedly told not to contact the two women due to 'legal process'.

He had admitted to sending 'inappropriate messages' but insisted they were 'between two consenting adults' and that his behaviour was not illegal.

But Dennis, who now lives in Fort Worth, Texas, now says his son will be back 'better and stronger' than ever - as he slammed the BBC for their treatment of him.

Jermaine, who earned £190,000 for his work with the broadcaster, was sacked under workplace culture guidelines following scandals involving Huw Edwards and Strictly Come Dancing.

Dennis continued: 'He's hoping he gets his TV career back and I am confident he will. The BBC is a big organisation and has protocols in place to deal with this kind of thing. That has to be respected. Ultimately, if the BBC and JJ come out of this better and stronger then all good.'
