The ‘spiritual’ meaning behind where Netflix thriller The Perfect Couple is filmed

Netflix’s The Perfect Couple launched this week and has delighted fans – but many want to know more about the filming locations of this picturesque series.

Starring Nicole Kidman in a role that some have suggested could be her new typecast, this latest murder mystery series has gripped fans who are obsessed with the lavish setting of this high-class drama.

The series focuses on Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson) who is set to marry into a wealthy family in a beautiful waterfront home.

The nuptials are set to be the wedding of the season – all paid for by Amelia’s future mother-in-law, the famous novelist Greer Garrison Winbury (Kidman) – but things take a nasty turn when a body is found washed up on the beach.

The synopsis teases: ‘As secrets come to light, the stage is set for a real-life investigation that feels plucked from the pages of one of Greer’s novels. Suddenly, everyone is a suspect.’

Where is The Perfect Couple set?

The series, which is based on the book by Elin Hilderbrand, is set in Nantucket.

The area is hugely popular with tourists and where many wealthy Americans spend their summer. According to a 2020 survey, the population of the town is around 14,255 but soars to 80,000 during July and August due to tourism.

The island is only accessible by boat, ferry or plane and is extraordinarily wealthy. In the first quarter of 2018, the average sale price for a single-family home was $2.3 million.

Location-wise, the island is part of Massachusetts and the most southeasternmost town in both Massachusetts and the New England region.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, the director Susanne Bier emphasised the significance of Nantucket in the series, explaining that the island is a ‘player on its own’.

‘The location is super important,’ she revealed, explaining that the island was a physical and spiritual presence in the six-part series.

‘The island of Nantucket is, is a, is a player of its own. And it’s not just the physical Island. It’s also like a mental island.

‘It is very, it’s, it’s very insular for good and bad.’

Where is The Perfect Couple filmed?

Although the series is filmed in Nantucket and the director has emphasised the importance of the location, it isn’t actually filmed in Nantucket.

The series was filmed in Chatham in Cape Cod, as well as London and Los Angeles.

Chatham is the second most affluent of the Cape Cod towns (after Provincetown) with a 2021 survey revealing that the average house price was $1.23 million which is still an awful lot but not quite as affluent as Nantucket.

A 2022 survey also found that the area’s population surges in the summer, going from around 229,000 but rises to a population of around 500,000 in the summer months.

Nantucket lies just over 30 miles south of Cape Cod, and experiences the same warm climate in the summer months with a ferry that hops between the two locations in just two hours and 20 minutes.

Cape Cod is a peninsula rather than an island but shots for the series still showed characters arriving via boat to emphasise that the characters are entrapment on the island.
