Adam Goldberg says Matthew Perry ‘elevated’ his performance in Friends (Picture: NBC)

Friends star Adam Goldberg has admitted he was ‘disturbed’ after reading Matthew Perry’s frank and honest memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.

Perry was found dead at his Los home aged 54 from the ‘acute effects of ketamine’ with five people now charged in connection to the death.

The Chandler Bing star was notoriously open about his addiction and substance abuse, but Goldberg – who starred as Eddie for three episodes of Friends – has revealed he wasn’t aware of Perry’s turmoil on set, ‘not even a little bit’.

Golderg told The Independent: ‘It was disturbing to read what he was going through.

‘There are so many people with drug and alcohol and psychological issues who are in this business.

‘It’s surprising the extent to which I wouldn’t necessarily have pegged him for one of them, but it’s certainly not surprising that someone in that environment gets ensconced in that. I do remember wondering where he was and what he was up to afterwards.’

Goldberg starred in 1993 cult classic Dazed and Confused before his Friends appearance, alongside the likes of then-up and coming actors Matthew McConaughey and Ben Stiller.

He almost turned down the role of Eddie in Friends, admitting he was a ‘snob’.

Thankfully he didn’t, became one of the most memorable characters as Chandler’s temperamental roommate and got to work with Perry, who ‘elevated’ Goldberg’s ‘game’.

‘I keep making tennis analogies because I’ve taken up tennis again after not playing for decades, but you play better if you’re playing somebody really good,’ he said.

‘And with Matt, it was always like having a great rally.’

Perry’s death left his Friends co-stars absolutely shattered. Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow and Courteney Cox released a joint statement days after Perry was found dead on October 28.
