Kate Garraway is facing ‘constant pain’ after the death of husband Derek Draper.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 57, announced that Draper had died in January this year following a lengthy and difficult three-year battle with complications related to Covid-19 aged 56.

A few months later Kate revealed she was at ‘the beginning of grief’ and was facing ‘many ups and downs’ but was doing her best to focus on their two children, Darcey, 18, and Billy, 14.

Now her friend and Good Morning Britain colleague Charlotte Hawkins has described what Kate, 56, is facing after the devastating loss.

‘When Kate lost her husband, Derek, in January, everyone pulled together to support her. She’s been through an extraordinarily tough time,’ the presenter said.

After losing her father to motor neurone disease, Charlotte she had some understanding of Kate’s grief.

‘When you lose someone that you love very much, it’s constant pain. You wonder what the way forward will be – it’s not a question of getting over it but learning to live with it,’ she told Best Magazine, as reported by The Mirror.

Explaining how she was ‘full of admiration’ for how Kate handled the cruel loss, Charlotte added: ‘It’s going to take time for Kate to heal, but she knows we’re all here for her.’

Draper, who had a long career in politics before retraining as a psychotherapist, spent over a year in hospital after being diagnosed with Covid in March 2020 and then required around-the-clock care in the subsequent three years.

Speaking to The Mirror in May, three months after Draper’s death, Kate said she was doing her best to ‘keep busy’.

‘I’m sure there will be a moment where I have to stop and deal with it,’ she said.

‘But at the moment I’m just keeping busy. Help is there. You just have to ask for it. And sometimes you have to ask for it time and time again.’

It came after Kate had said she was ‘trying to keep her head above water’ a few weeks earlier.
