Meryl Streep was taken aback when the camera panned across to her after she was compared to a ‘jockstrap’ at the Emmys.

The Hollywood icon was in the audience at the annual ceremony in LA on Sunday night to celebrate her efforts as Loretta Durkin in the third season of Only Murders in the Building.

The 75-year-old was nominated for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for the role, alongside Hannah Einbrinder for Hacks, Liza Colon-Zayas for the Bear, Palm Royale’s Carol Burnett and Abbott Elementary icons Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph.

Liza went on to take home the trophy but many were left baffled when It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson appeared on stage to present the award, as they suggested that she is similar to underwear.

‘Ladies and gentlemen, we are here to honor the comedic performances that hold everything in place. They show crucial support when it’s really needed,’ Rob told the star-studded crowd.

‘Much like a jockstrap,’ his co-star – and wife – interjected. ‘What you were describing sounds very much like a jockstrap.’

‘No it doesn’t,’ he hit back, before continuing: ‘These roles make sure everything stays secure, without this support, the whole package falls apart… Alright, this does sound like a jockstrap.’

‘Yeah, are you calling Meryl Streep a jockstrap?,’ Kaitlyn laughed as the camera panned over to the Devil Wears Prada star, who was seated beside castmate Martin Short.

As Rob apologized for the apparent slight, Meryl awkwardly looked down, and could be seen saying, ‘Oh, God’ at the bizarre moment.

Many on social media were left fuming by the quip and flocked to social media to unpack the scenes, branding the whole thing ‘cringe’.

They also praised the Oscar-winner for reacting with ‘pure class’ at the comment.

Messy Mind of Me tweeted: ‘I can’t believe @RMcElhenney just called Meryl Streep a jockstrap #Emmys #EmmyAwards.’

Lis agreed: ‘I don’t know who wrote the #EmmyAwards tonight, but the dialog is soooooo cringe. They just compared Meryl Streep to a jock strap. Yeah, it’s that bad [sic].’

As Bravo_Junkie1 added: ‘Wow. Meryl did NOT like that jock strap joke! #Emmys.’

Although Meryl wasn’t victorious last night, she could pick up a trophy at next year’s ceremony after reprising her role in the fourth season, which is currently airing on Hulu and Disney+.

Speaking about the series earlier this year, she revealed that she had actually asked for a role herself after enjoying working alongside Steve Martin in It’s Complicated.
