Whoopi Goldberg has fans divided — this time, with her defense of Janet Jackson.

In an episode of The View that aired Monday, September 23, Goldberg, 68, shared her thoughts on Jackson's recent interview with The Guardian, in which the 58-year-old singer called into question the racial identity of Kamala Harris.

While Jackson faced immediate backlash for her comments — "She's not Black. That's what I heard. That she's Indian." — Goldberg opined on The View that people should be willing to extend "a little grace" to the "Together Again" performer.

"Sometimes people get it wrong and they're wrong! They made a mistake; they were wrong. It happens," Goldberg said. "Anybody who says it doesn't happen to every one of us, multiracial or not, we all do it. So OK, a little grace for the girl. A little grace for the girl."

While some viewers agreed with Goldberg, many others took to X (formerly Twitter) to express chagrin over the EGOT winner's call for amnesty. Some said that it was irresponsible for someone of Jackson's stature to misspeak on such a large platform.

"i just don't understand why janet wouldn't at least do her research before opening her mouth," said one X user.

Another user said that Goldberg is only willing to grant Jackson some grace because Goldberg herself is known to also cause controversy with her words.

"She only says this cause she's constantly saying stupid a** s*** also," they said.

Another called Goldberg out, saying "pls the amount of times whoopi has not extended grace to others."

At the time of writing, Jackson herself has not backtracked on her statements, despite a man named Mo Elmasri claiming to be one of Jackson's reps issuing a statement to BuzzFeed, before one of Jackson's actual reps noted to Variety that the aforementioned apology was unauthorized.

Variety later reached out to Elmasri claiming that he was fired after the ordeal, however, whether or not he actually worked for Jackson was called into question. Jackson has been managed by her brother, Randy, for several years, and both were said to be unavailable for comment, as they are mourning the loss of their brother, Tito, who died on Sunday, September 15.
