House of the Dragon, season two, episode four spoilers below

It was the stuff of nightmares for Team Black. The fourth episode of House of the Dragon season two, which aired on Sunday night, was a traumatising thrill ride, with a battle scene that rivalled some of the very best from Game of Thrones.

The episode, which reviewers have described as “spectacular” and “shouting-at-the-TV level glorious”, concluded with a major three-way battle between Princess Rhaenys, King Aegon II, and Prince Aemond, in which Princess Rhaenys, who had the opportunity to flee the aerial showdown on her dragon, turned back to face Aemond – a decision which proved fatal.

That moment – choosing to go to battle in Rhaenyra’s place; choosing to have one final crack at the malevolent prince – has changed the course of history in the Seven Kingdoms: “I felt very strongly that there were these really important beats that we needed to mark,” said Rhaenys actor Eve Best to Variety.

“In particular, the knowledge of the fact that it’s very likely a kamikaze mission. It has to be, because effectively, she’s starting a nuclear war, and she has been the one character throughout who’s done everything she can to stop them.”

The episode is still trending on X, with fans of the Game of Thrones prequel still trying to catch their breath, and sharing commiserations. See some of the best reactions below.
