That was unfortunate timing for the BBC and Gareth Southgate… (Picture: BBC)

England fans were left baffled after an unfortunately-timed technical difficulty saw the BBC cut off Gareth Southgate’s post-match interview to a feed from Spanish TV.

After England lost out on their first international trophy in 60 years to Spain in tonight’s Berlin Euro 2024 final, the England manager took to the microphone for his all-important post-match interview.

But having only said a handful of words, Southgate’s de-brief was cut short when the coverage switched to a random Spanish TV interview instead. Ouch.

The technical issue was quickly resolved after cutting back to Gary Lineker in the studio, and Southgate’s interview was shown.

But fans took to social media baffled about the bizarre blunder, as Jack Stacey wrote on X: ‘Southgate interview starts, coverage switched to a Spanish interview… wtf.’

Victoria Imerelli commented: ‘Not the BBC cutting off Southgate’s interview after ONE SENTENCE. I am dying.’

I’ll gladly pay more TV licence if you keep cutting off England interviews for Spanish ones @BBC pic.twitter.com/MlFlks6KQe

@SPFLWatch joked, ‘Spanish TV even stealing the feed from the English,’ while X user Jords quipped: ‘The BBC broadcast is violating, they cut out Southgate mid excuse.’

When the interview was eventually broadcast, Southgate conceded that Spain were the better team, but the manager said he was proud of how the Three Lions played.

‘I think they were the best team in the tournament,’ he told the BBC. ‘We didn’t keep the ball well enough but we were in it until the last. I am devastated for everyone, players have been incredible, I am so proud.

‘We had a little bit of momentum. Big chance at the end to equalise as well but I’m not sure we did quite enough.

‘Against Spain you have to keep the ball when you win it back. We were fine defensively in the first half but that takes it out your legs.

‘There’s no hiding from we have had a lot of issues. We have managed to deal with most of them but we have fallen short.

‘The payers have got to take enormous credit for getting us as close as they did.

‘I am proud of the way they have fought, represented the shirt with pride, never beaten until five minutes of the last game. We didn’t quite keep the ball well enough, they had more control and that made the difference.’

After bringing England captain Harry Kane off at 60 minutes, Southgate explained how the tournament had been ‘physically tough’ for the striker.

‘He came into the tournament short on games and has not quite reached the level we all would have hoped,’ he said.
