Another Like A Dragon spin-off might be imminent (Sega)

This year’s Tokyo Game Show is promising to be the biggest in a long time, so here’s what you can expect from Japan’s premier gaming convention.

In decades past, the Tokyo Game Show used to be one of the biggest game events in the world, rivalling even E3. But as the Japanese games industry struggled to stay relevant during the Xbox 360 era the Tokyo Game Show also became increasingly irrelevant, but its time may have come again.

While it’s unlikely to rival something like The Game Awards, or even Gamescom, in terms of new game announcements, it’s very important for Japanese publishers like Capcom, Square Enix, and Sega, when it comes to showcasing their upcoming titles.

Last year’s event, for example, saw early glimpses of Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Dragon’s Dogma 2. This year should be even more notable, with the return of PlayStation, which hasn’t had a major presence at the show since 2019. But why else should you be excited? Here’s the full rundown of what to expect from the Tokyo Game Show 2024.

When is the Tokyo Game Show 2024?

Get ready for the biggest TGS yet (Tokyo Game Show)

The event runs from Thursday, September 26 to Sunday, September 29 at the Makuhari Messe convention centre in Japan. At the weekend, the show is open to the public, with tickets available for both Saturday and Sunday on the official website.

There will be 3,190 exhibit booths at the event this year, the largest amount in Tokyo Game Show history.

What games are confirmed for Tokyo Game Show 2024?

While we know the list of companies at the event, few of them have confirmed what games they will be showing – although it’s easy enough to guess at least some of them.

The only lock at this point is a new game from Like A Dragon developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, who confirmed some ‘Yakuza goods’ for the event. Some have speculated it could be a sequel to spin-off Lost Judgment, but the team recently said fans will be ‘surprised’ by its next game, so it could be something else entirely.

The presence of PlayStation miy be connected to Hideo Kojima, who appeared to confirm his attendance by sharing the event’s poster. The obvious conclusion is a potential gameplay showing for Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, which still doesn’t have a release date, but there’s a chance we could hear something about his Metal Gear successor too.

The developers behind Infinity Nikki, the open world dress-up adventure game seen in Sony’s latest State Of Play, have a public exhibition at the event too – so it’s very likely that title will be playable in some capacity.

What other games could make an appearance?

As for what else could be shown, it’s possible to make some educated guesses based on the companies confirmed for the convention.

The presence of Atlus suggests role-player Metaphor ReFantazio, set to be released in November, will be at the event. Koei Tecmo, who recently announced Dynasty Warriors: Origins, will also have a public exhibition, along with Palworld developer Pocketpair – which could be the moment they announce a PlayStation 5 version.

Many might be hoping for some sort of Kingdom Hearts 4 update from Square Enix, but it’s more likely they’ll be showing off Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake, which is set to come out November 14.

Bandai Namco will likely be showcasing Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero before it launches in October, but it’s possible we could also get some sort of update on Little Nightmares 3.

Capcom, who traditionally have a key presence at the show, will also be back this year. Monster Hunter Wilds will probably be the main focus, but it’s possible that we could hear something Resident Evil 9 related, as it’s rumoured to be out next year.

Other notable, confirmed studios confirmed include Ubisoft, likely for the Japan-orienated Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Sega, which has Sonic X Shadows Generations coming out in late October. The latter is also planning several reboots of its classic franchises including Crazy Taxi, so we might hear more news about those too.

As for those we can rule out, Microsoft will not have any Xbox presence at this year’s event, while Nintendo is only listed under the ‘business meeting area’ section, so don’t expect any reveals from them either.

That does very much suggest that Nintendo will be talking to publishers and developers about the Switch 2 behind closed doors, so there is the chance of something unofficial leaking out.
