What is going on with the PS5’s upgrade? (Sony)

Rather than being released this autumn, the latest rumours suggest that the PS5 Pro upgrade console may not even be out this year.

For months the existence of the PS5 Pro – a more powerful and expensive variant of the current PlayStation 5 – has been taken as a given, that’s widely expected to be announced this autumn, for release sometime before Christmas.

Sony has only vaguely hinted at the upgrade console’s existence but there’s been so many leaks, including detailed technical specifications, that there’s seemed little doubt that it is real. But now the source that was the first to leak information about the console has cast doubt on whether it really will be released this year.

Insider Tom Henderson has a solid track record as a leaker, but particularly when it comes to Sony hardware, as he was the first to reveal information on the PlayStation Portal. He hasn’t mentioned PS5 Pro in a while though – in fact, no leaker has – and instead has implied that a 2024 launch is no longer certain.

The comment was brief, but Henderson was replying to a fan who suggested that September, after Gamescom in August, would be a likely time for the PS5 Pro to be announced (which is logical).

Instead of agreeing, the reply was: ‘If it releases this year!’ Which is the first time there’s been any suggestion the console wouldn’t be out in 2024.

Previously, when asked if there were any new updates on the PS5 Pro, he gave the vaguer answer of, ‘I’ve heard some rumblings but can’t verify at the moment.’

At the time, it wasn’t clear that might mean a delay but now it seems that may well be what’s going on.

With hardware, it’s impossible to tell whether a delay might be due to manufacturing issues or a change in plan but many have long complained that it seems too early in the PlayStation 5’s lifecycle for an upgrade.

The PS4 Pro appeared at a similar time in the PlayStation 4’s lifetime but the first two years of the PlayStation 5 were marred by the pandemic, which severely limited the amount of stock available.

If it releases this year!

The other problem with releasing it this year is that there are no high-profile games releasing alongside it, which could be used to illustrate its power. As excited as many fans are about Astro Bot, Sony don’t seem to consider it a major release and its appeal is not primarily in terms of its graphics.

It certainly seems possible that Sony might want to delay the PS5 Pro’s release to coincide with a more graphically complex game, but then that risks bumping into the release of the Switch 2 next year.

Although what may be a more important consideration for Sony is the launch of GTA 6, with rumours suggesting that the PS5 Pro will be positioned as the best way to play the game – which may in turn mean delaying the console’s release until closer to GTA 6’s launch, which is not expected until autumn 2025.

Surely the PS4 Pro wasn’t just a one-off? (Sony)
