Singer Sandy Posey has died aged 80.

The star, who had hits with songs including Single Girl and Born A Woman in the 1960s, has died following complications from dementia.

She passed away at home in Tennessee, on Saturday morning, her husband Wade Cummins confirmed to TMZ.

Cummins told the publication that she slowly declined over seven years due to her health condition. However, he lamented that she had otherwise been in good health.

Posey was surrounded by her family – Cummins, her daughter Amy and her niece – when she passed away.

She was cared for by Cummins in her final years, who said he was heartbroken by the loss.

‘She was the love of his life, and he’s missing her deeply,’ the publication report.

The family plans to host a celebration of her life, which he will film for Facebook so that fans can join in the remembrance.

Posey was born in Jasper, Alabama and attended high school in West Memphis, Arkansas. After graduation, she began to work as a session singer and performed backing vocals for Elvis Presley, Percy Sledge, and Tommy Roe.

Her first solo single Kiss Me Goodnight was released in 1965, but her first hit came a year later with Born a Woman, which sold over one million copies and received two Grammy Award nominations.

Her other hits included I Take It Back, Bring Him Safely Home to Me, and What a Woman in Love Won’t Do.
