The real flying simulator (Sony Interactive Entertainment)

PlayStation’s driving simulator has turned into a flight sim following a new update, which Polyphony Digital is now investigating.

Gran Turismo might be known as a driving simulator which can turn gamers into real racing drivers, but a new update has blasted its serious reputation into space.

Following an update to Gran Turismo 7 was rolled out on Thursday, players have been sharing clips on social media of their own cars and AI vehicles being randomly launched into the air.

The issue isn’t limited to catapulting cars skywards either, with some clips showing them bouncing around like they’re trapped on a trampoline, or glitching out altogether. You can check some out below and they’re pretty amazing.

Developer Polyphony Digital has since acknowledged the issue, which is tied to a ‘particular car setting’ within the menu, and is working on a fix.

‘Unintended vehicle behaviour is produced when a particular car setting is set within Car Settings,’ a tweet from the developer reads. ‘This issue is currently under investigation. We apologise for any inconvenience this may be causing.’

While this might be inconvenient for anyone wanting to play Gran Turismo 7 normally, for everyone else, it’s a sweet, comical blessing.

There’s even more gold over on the Gran Turismo Reddit, which shows the bug affecting dramatic cutscenes and the VR mode. Others, meanwhile, have stuck music from Mario Kart over it all, to amplify the silliness.

Gran Turismo 7’s recent July update added one new track, new rims, and six new cars into the game. It has received regular updates since it launched on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in March 2022.

Last year, a Gran Turismo film based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, who became a professional racing car driver from the games, was released in cinemas.
