If you’ve been struggling to get hold of Heinz Ploughman’s Pickle at the supermarket recently, we have some bad news.

The popular condiment, which adds zing to cheese sandwiches and graces many a ‘picky tea’, is officially gone from shelves for good – so you’ll have to stock up on the last remaining jars or get your fix elsewhere.

On X, concerned customer @Pitt1Sarah asked the brand what was going on with the product, writing: ‘I am trying to buy Heinz Ploughman’s Pickle but can’t buy it anywhere.’

Like many, Sarah was a fan of this version because it’s gluten-free, as a number of alternatives contain barley which may cause a reaction in people with coeliac disease.

But in response, a Heinz spokesperson confirmed the worst, replying: ‘Sorry to say but this product has now been discontinued.’

In a separate tweet, the manufacturer added: ‘Unfortunately we no longer produce Ploughman’s Pickle.’

@HeinzUK I am trying to buy Heinz ploughman’s pickle but can’t buy it anywhere. Has it been discontinued? I like it cause it’s Gluten free

Others have lamented the product’s disappearance from stores in recent months, including @Feldynn who said: ‘Found some random jars of Heinz Ploughman’s in the discount section of the local shop and grabbed them like I’d just discovered pure gold. Which, let’s face it, I pretty much had!’

In a review on the Tesco website, an anonymous shopper also praised it, commenting: ‘This is by far the best pickle for any occasions and use.’

Heinz Ploughman’s Pickle has been hard to come by for some time, and since 2022 has only been sold at at Ocado, as well as in certain convenience stores and online.

However, the tangy British staple is now out of production indefinitely and – despite questions online – Heinz hasn’t announced any plans to launch a reformulated or rebranded recipe either.

Branston Pickle or supermarket own-brand options are the closest substitutes, but these may not be suitable for those on a gluten-free diet – always double check the ingredients if you’re not sure.

This isn’t the only Heinz product to be axed recently, as its Firecracker Sauce got the chop late last year followed by Five Beanz Snap Pots in may.

But the weak must make way for the strong, and in the place of these discontinued items are some exciting new additions.

As part of a collaboration with Heinz, Walkers is releasing three limited-edition crisp flavours inspired by Britain’s favourite sandwiches: Roast Chicken and Heinz Mayo, Sausage Sarnie and Heinz Ketchup, and Cheese Toastie with Heinz Beanz.

The brand has a huge range of sauces too – from Morley’s Fried Chicken to Pickle, Curry and Smokey Bacon-flavoured Ketchup – so you’re spoiled for choice if you need something tangy to fill the Ploughman’s-shaped void in your condiment cupboard.
