If you’re a fan of Walkers crisps, then there’s likely one flavour you’ve really wanted to see make a comeback — barbecue.

The crisps in the black packet were first launched in the 1990s but were quietly phased out several years later, initially being replaced by BBQ Ribs, which were also later discontinued.

They made a brief comeback in 2023 as a limited-edition special, but then poof, they vanished once more.

On social media, lovers of the flavour have been begging Walkers to bring them back for years, with one superfan on Reddit, known as u/UnreliableChemist writing: ‘Feel like pure s**t just want BBQ Walkers back.’

Similarly, u/Jimbobhas said: ‘The original BBQ flavour were the only crisps I liked as a kid.’ And u/Inner-Thing321 proclaimed: ‘They were the best ever flavour.’

Over on X (formerly Twitter), @jemimahhxo posted: ‘I’ve been craving BBQ Walkers crisps since I was like 9.’ While @Dee_Cee95x claimed ‘the world would be a better place’ if Walkers brought the flavour back.

And it seems their prayers might finally have been answered… well, kind of.

This is because the crisp giants have just revealed a new flavour and it’s pretty similar to the old favourite.

Sold in black packets, the new crisps are called Smokin’ BBQ Sauce and the best part is that you don’t have to wait long to try them, as they are available right now in Tesco supermarkets nationwide.

Sainsbury’s shoppers will be able to get their hands on them from September 2, while in Morrisons the product will be launching in October.

The crisps are made using 100% Great British potatoes and feature a smoky BBQ sauce flavour, which Walkers says will give fans ‘a brand-new taste sensation’.

Smokin’ BBQ Sauce will be joining the brand’s core crisp range, which already features popular flavours such as Cheese & Onion, Ready Salted and Salt & Vinegar.

Stephanie Herbert, Marketing Senior Brand Manager from Walkers said, ‘For years Walkers fans have been calling out for a BBQ flavour to join our core range. We’ve heard those calls loud & clear so we can’t wait for crisp lovers nationwide to try out the brand-new Walkers Smokin’ BBQ Sauce flavour!’

The crisps are available in single packs, multipacks and grab bags, with prices ranging between £1 and £2.

And this isn’t the only new flavour Walkers has released lately, as the brand recently dropped an exciting collaboration with Heinz.

The limited-edition snacks are all inspired by classic sarnies and one flavour in particular will likely prove rather controversial.

First up there’s Roast Chicken and Heinz Mayo flavour, then there’s Sausage Sarnie and Heinz Ketchup, followed by Cheese Toastie with Heinz Beanz. Yep, you read that right, baked beans flavour crisps!

Walkers hailed the sandwich inception crisp flavours as ‘mind blowing’, saying they would ‘level up’ people’s lunches.

The new flavours are available in supermarkets nationwide from today, with 45g grab bags (£1) as well as multipacks of five for £1.65. Retailers include Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Co-op, Iceland, Aldi, B&M, Farmfoods, TJs, and Poundland.

The crisp giant hasn’t confirmed how long the limited-edition products will be around for, but they did warn that you’ll have to be quick if you want to try them.
