Heinz has unveiled a new tinned pasta product (Picture: Heinz)

Calling all Heinz lovers: a brand-new tinned product is on the horizon – but it’s potentially a divisive one.

Marking their first pasta launch in a decade, the Heinz Spaghetti Carbonara is hitting shelves in September – but naturally, fans are conflicted.

Experimenting with flavours isn’t a new endeavour for the company, famous for various tinned pasta dishes, including spaghetti hoops and spaghetti Bolognese. And who could forget the pickle ketchup and 14-flavour ‘Every Sauce’?

Heinz’s new invention aims to take the ‘drama’ out of cooking this Italian classic, with research from Statista revealing that 32% of Gen Zs want their food to be both fast and convenient.

So, if you’re not a fan of cheffing it up in the kitchen, the thought of shaving off a few minutes by de-tinning and heating your dinner might sound appealing.

‘We understand that people are looking for convenient meals that are effortless to prepare, and our new Spaghetti Carbonara delivers just that,’ said Alessandra de Dreuille, Meals Director at Kraft Heinz.

It’s the perfect solution for a quick and satisfying meal at home. Whether enjoyed as a comforting meal after a long day or shared with friends whilst catching up on the latest TV series, Heinz Spaghetti Carbonara is the perfect fuss-free dinner solution.’

However, not everyone is impressed with the idea of combining pasta with tin cans – and some have even ‘apologised’ to Italians worldwide for this spin on a classic dish, which traditionally uses only spaghetti, pancetta, olive oil, garlic, eggs and parmesan.

‘If, ladies and gentlemen you want to know what pastiche is, this Heinz abomination is pastiche,’ @TanyaSzendeffy wrote on X, formerly Twitter. ‘Italians. We apologise.’

Meanwhile, @AmandaPCraig labelled the move the ‘end of days,’ noting that carbonara takes ‘five mins to make, does not require cream but pasta water, [and] is cheap & delicious,’ as @AnnaMaria795857 joked: ‘I imagine this will be way worse than my try at it!’

And @hwallop pondered whether the move was ‘sacrilege’ or ‘part of Heinz’s noble century-long tradition of canning pasta?’

There were some who were intrigued, as @GaynorBussell wrote: ‘My hubby loves Heinz tinned spaghetti (I never buy it though) and his fav meal is spaghetti carbonara,’ while @joshbythesea simply wrote: ‘What’s that? Heinz with its first pasta launch in more than a decade? Carbonara in a tin. Obvs.’

When does Heinz Spaghetti Carbonara launch?

Interested to try? The Heinz Spaghetti Carbonara will be available in supermarkets across the UK from September, with a retail price of £2.
