It’s not common knowledge but men can squirt just like women (Picture: Getty)

When we think of squirting during sex, we think of women. But did you know that men do it too?

Honestly, we didn’t either, but similarly to us ladies, when men are aroused they have the potential to do more than just come.

Whether the men who are capable of squirting just don’t talk about it, or whether it’s just really uncommon isn’t clear, according to health professionals.

Despite limited research, we’re here to give you the lowdown on it, so you can be prepared if it ever happens to you!

Doctor Joseph Ambani at Glowbar tells Metro.co.uk it’s a very normal (though not much talked about) part of getting turned on.

‘Male squirting is the release of prostatic fluid during sexual activity, and it’s different from the typical ejaculatory process involving semen,’ he explains.

‘While it may go unnoticed or be misunderstood, this fluid is released via the urethra and often occurs with prostate stimulation, although it can also happen during regular sexual arousal.’

Dr Ambani says that unlike semen, the liquid that’s squirted is a ‘clear, viscous fluid’ from the prostate and it doesn’t contain sperm.

Doctor Shirin Lakhani tells Metro that one study done on a 25-year-old man found ‘translucent, misty fluids with a creatine level similar to that of urine’, which squirted about a minute after ejaculation.

The study in the National Library of Medicine claimed that this squirting was caused by the strong contraction of the prostate and pelvic muscles.

Dr Ambani agrees that prostate stimulation is the main trigger – either directly by internal massage or by general arousal – but it’s not the sole cause.

‘The prostate is densely innervated, making it highly responsive to touch, but this fluid release can also occur during typical intercourse without explicit prostate focus. It is not confined to specific types of sexual activity,’ he explains.

Basically men could squirt regardless of the sexual activity they’re partaking in, it doesn’t have to be anal.

So how does this compare to female squirting? Well, Dr Ambani believes the two do bear similarities.

‘The para-urethral glands in men and Skene’s glands in women both respond to stimulation,’ the doctor says.

‘Both processes involve the release of fluid from glands related to sexual arousal. In men, however, the prostate plays a central role, contributing fluid that supports sperm motility but, in this case, is expelled independently of semen.’

Basically, when women and men get sexually aroused, both have the ability to squirt a similar fluid.

So, for the ladies, is there a chance your partner could squirt when having penetrative sex – yes – but Dr Ambani doesn’t believe that this should be a concern.

‘In terms of female health, there’s no risk associated with male squirting during penetrative sex. Prostatic fluid is sterile and poses no harm to the vaginal environment,’ he explains.

Both he and other doctors who have spoken on the topic of male squirting all believe more research is needed on the topic and a more open dialogue around it is needed.

Bodily functions like squirting should be destigmatised for both men and women and there shouldn’t be any pressure to do it, or indeed not do it.
