Stock up on your match beers and half-time snacks, as major supermarket chains have adjusted their opening hours for the Euros 2024 final tonight.
That’s right, folks, today is the day, and with pretty much everyone set to watch the match later this evening, some UK supermarkets and shops have amended their opening hours so staff can join in on the fun.
With the England vs Spain kick off at 8pm tonight, some retailers have chosen to shut early on Sunday and open later on Monday (which means you’ll need to get your hangover cures now…).
It’s worth noting that these changes to opening hours do not apply to shops in Scotland and Wales – but are worth taking note of.
Lidl
Bargain supermarket Lidl has announced that all of its stores in England will open one hour later on Monday.
While exact opening times vary across the country (you can check individual locations via the website), the majority of the chain’s supermarkets open at 8am on Mondays, meaning they will open at 9am after the England game.
Normal hours will resume on Tuesday 16 July.
Tesco
Tesco is another supermarket chain which is adjusting its opening hours on Sunday.
The retailer will be closing all of its Express stores (and there are over 1,800 of them!) at 7.30pm, instead of 10pm or 11pm, so that their employees can watch the final.
The supermarket added that workers would be paid for their regular shift so no employee will lose out on money because the store has closed early. There’s also no obligation to watch the game, either, so employees not watching the final will also be paid as normal, too.
Despite closing stores early on Sunday, all Tesco supermarkets are set to reopen, with business as usual on Monday morning – mostly opening at 6am or 7am. The retailer also announced that any online orders already placed for Sunday evening would still be honoured and delivered.
Poundland
Not a supermarket, but if you buy your bargains on a Sunday evening, you’ll need to get to Poundland a little earlier today.
The store is also adjusting its opening hours for the Euro 2024 final. All stores are to operate as normal on Sunday, but will open 30 minutes later on Monday morning, with Poundland saying the decision was made so its workers could ‘fully enjoy the Euro final on Sunday night’.
Shoppers are encouraged to check their local Poundland’s opening hours for exact times.
Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s will be closing both its stores and petrol stations early on Sunday, across England.
Over 1,000 branches of Sainsbury’s Local are set to close at 7.30pm (as opposed to the usual times of 10pm or 11pm). The the larger stores will not be affected, as they typically close between 4-6pm on Sundays anyway.
All branches will reopen at normal times on Monday morning and, again, all online orders already placed, will be honoured.
