Summer is finally here! It goes without saying that it won’t last long, but the UK is in the midst of a mini heatwave with temperatures predicted to hit 31C.
And of course, for any self-respecting Brit that only means one thing: it’s BBQ time.
And given this one won’t get rained off, you’ll want to make the most of it – and that means buying some great food.
But, you don’t have to spend a fortune for a truly delicious summer feast.
BBC Good Food recently announced the winners of their Summer Taste Awards, which recognises the best supermarket buys for barbecues and picnics.
And when it came to the best bangers to get on the barbie, a budget retailer came out on top.
Lidl Deluxe Sausages in Honey & Mustard was crowned the winner of the best sausages. And, for just six, they’re an absolute steal at £2.49.
‘These sausages were a hit with the crowd,’ said the publication. ‘They boasted a flavourful blend of mustard with a touch of honey sweetness.’
Lidl is actually the second cheapest supermarket in the UK right now, with prices that beat even those offered as part of popular loyalty schemes, such as Tesco Clubcard and Sainsbury’s Nectar.
A basket of 65 items from Lidl (which included branded products like Birds Eye Garden Peas, Heinz Baked Beans, as well as own-brand milk and butter) was just £121.31 on average, only beaten by Aldi, at£118.41.
However, if it’s a meat-free BBQ you’re after, the Summer Taste Awards said that ASDA’s OMV! Deliciously Vegan Butcher Inspired No Pork Sausages were the best.
At £2.95 for six, judges said they had a ‘remarkably authentic sausage taste and texture’.
Time to start firing up that grill…
