A plane with 62 people on board has crashed in a fiery wreck in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state.

Brazilian airline Voepass confirmed on Friday evening (UK time) the plane had crashed in the municipality of Vinhedo, but it was not immediately clear how many people were injured or killed or what caused the incident.

Voepass said the plane had been headed for Sao Paulo's international airport Guarulhos, and had 58 passengers and four crew members aboard.

Video shared on social media appeared to show the plane plunging to the ground in a nosedive, disappearing behind a cluster of trees before a large plume of black smoke erupted into the air.

Brazil’s TV GloboNews showed other footage that showed a large area on fire, and smoke coming out of what appeared to be the wrecked fuselage of a plane.

The ATR-72 plane operated by airline Voepass Linhas Areas was en route from Cascavel, in the state of Parana, to Guarulhos, in Sao Paulo, website G1 said, citing Voepass.

Sao Paulo's state fire brigade confirmed on social media that a plane crashed in Vinhedo, and that it had sent seven crews to the region of the accident.

Brazil’s airport authority Infraero did not immediately confirm the information after a request from The Associated Press.
