Four people have died and nine were injured when a minivan crashed into a nail salon in Long Island, New York, on Friday.

The incident occurred at Hawaii Nail & Spa in Deer Park at about 4.40pm. The vehicle came to a stop at the back of the salon.

Dominic Albanese of the Deer Park fire department said: "There were people trapped. We extricated them and transported them to area hospitals."

The driver was found semiconscious and taken to hospital. Officials have not yet determined if the crash was accidental or intentional.

Eyewitness Eric Perez told Newsday he heard a speeding car followed by a shattering sound. He later saw emergency workers removing victims from the scene.

About 150 firefighters and medical personnel responded to the crash. Suffolk County police are investigating the incident.

The salon, located in a strip mall, was left with a large hole in its storefront.

Albanese added: "It's horrible. It's going to be tough for the community, tough for the volunteer fire department. But we're going to get through it."
