Donald Trump has held another small campaign event ostensibly themed on crime and safety yet that veered off course into other topics as the former president rambled and failed to stay on message.

While at times repeating himself regarding immigration, Trump also claimed that suburban women actually like him, blaming a “fake poll” for any counter-narrative because he had kept low-income towers from being built in the suburbs and kept illegal aliens out. He also claimed people risked rape or death if they crossed the street to buy bread.

Meanwhile, Trump doubled down on personal attacks against Kamala Harris, despite being advised against it by Republican strategists, taking her to task for declining to debate him on Fox News on September 4.

Elsewhere, Ohio Senator JD Vance, the former president’s running mate, has accused Democratic Governor of Kentucky Andy Beshear of “wishing” one of his family members “would get raped”.

Beshear criticized Vance for past comments about exceptions to abortion bans in the case of rape or incest in which he called such a pregnancy “inconvenient” saying it “fails any test of decency of humanity”.

The senator claimed the governor’s phrasing implied he wanted him to experience such a situation – something the governor called “ridiculous”.

Fox host echoes Trump claim that Harris leading in polls must be wrong

Jesse Watters has echoed Trump’s claims that recent polling reporting Kamala Harris in the lead is inaccurate – even as experts say their methodology was reliable.

Watters, one of Fox News’s most-watched anchors, said on Sunday that “pollsters are dramatically oversampling Democrats and then burying the samples so you can’t see it.”

This comes after he claimed earlier this month that “the media” is “juicing the polls.”

Watters then referenced a recent New York Times/Siena College poll, which showed Harris holding a four-point lead in the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

The Trump campaign criticized that poll earlier this month, arguing it did not include enough people who voted for Trump in 2020 and skewed the results in Harris’s favor as a result.

But polling experts have since told The Independent that criticisms of the Times/Siena poll aren’t valid.

Katie Hawkinson reports.

Voters trust Republicans more than Democrats on most key issues, new data shows

According to exclusive polling data from Savanta for The Independent, the American electorate still seems more inclined to trust Republicans over Democrats.

The nationwide survey, which questioned 1,892 registered voters from August 9 to 13, found that the five most important issues in this year’s election are: the economy, inflation, healthcare, jobs and crime.

But healthcare is the only issue where voters place their trust in Democrats (53 per cent) over Republicans (38 per cent). The GOP is perceived as better placed to manage all other major topics.

This is a significant barrier that Kamala Harris will need to overcome this November.

Trump thinks Pennsylvania is key to winning the White House

Here’s Josh Marcus on the Republican’s singular focus on the Keystone State, which he believes will be pivotal come November 5 and which, the conventional wisdom insists, Democrats could have gained a significant stranglehold over had Kamala Harris picked Governor Josh Shapiro as her running mate over Tim Walz.

Time will tell on that one.

He claimed that “the Marxist left has waged a vicious war on law enforcement” and “taken away the dignity and spirit” of police officers.
