An unprecedented number of migrants are entering the United States over the Northern border with Canada.

The country's northern border with Canada is confronting a record-breaking surge in illegal immigration within the last financial year of 2023-2024.

Data gathered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), shows18,644 foreign nationals were apprehended in May while attempting to enter the U.S. illegally from Canada, marking the highest total since September 2023.

The number of illegal crossings from the northern border into the US has steadily increased as the data here shows 16,848 migrants attempted to enter the country in May.

The rising trend in illegal crossings has prompted concern among lawmakers and border control officials who attribute the surge to various policy decisions and socioeconomic factors.

President Joe Biden's critics argue that the US-Canada border remains open for migrants seeking to enter the country illegally and claim asylum because it's not part of the Biden administration's latest restrictions.

The 5,500-mile US-Canada border is the longest in the world and is open to all U.S. citizens.

Following his election victory in 2020, Biden promised a more "humane" approach to border policies after the Trump administration had adopted a strict right-wing border policy.

The Swanton sector, which covers New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire has become the number one hotspot in the northern border for illegal crossings and has seen migrants coming from 85 different countries since October.

It's the busiest sector at the northern border and spans 295 miles of international boundary with the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario.

Plans to halt unlawful crossings by Republicans have been discussed in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election.

Last year, GOP lawmakers led by Mike Kelly formed the Northern Border Security Caucus, a coalition of 28 Members of Congress who are focused on a rise in drug trafficking, along with the decrease in Border Patrol agents and lack of security, along the U.S.-Canada border.

In a statement shared on X, Representative Mike Kelly said: "The Northern border is virtually unwatched. Over the last three years, the Northern border has seen a record number of border crossings – 189,402 land encounters in all of FY23. The Homeland Security Appropriations Act provides funding to secure our Southern AND Northern Borders."

In addition to this, staggering statistics from the CBP show that more than 7.2 million migrants had illegally crossed into the U.S. over the Southwest border during U.S. President Joe Biden's administration. This figure is higher than the individual populations of 36 states.
