Worrying footage has shown Russian forces ruthlessly bombing just one-third of a mile from NATO territory.
Four NATO combat jets were scrambled as Russian drones hit Ukraine’s Izmail port on the River Danube.
Three people were killed, and at least 14 wounded, in a kamikaze drone strike which ignited and destroyed one residential block which was seen collapsing in flames.
One Iranian-designed Shahed drone overflew the territory of Romania, a NATO state, for almost three minutes.
The first dramatic film of the early Friday attack shows explosions from across the Danube, which is just one-third of a mile wide.
It comes amid deep tension with NATO over the Ukraine war, with Putin threatening the West with nuclear strikes.
Among the wounded civilians from the strike were three children aged three, 13 and 14.
The Romanian defence ministry said it ‘strongly condemns these attacks carried out by Russia against Ukrainian civilian objects and infrastructure, which are unjustified and seriously contradict international law.’
Russian sources claimed that NATO weapons supplies to Ukraine were ‘damaged’ in a strike of the port and ship repair yard in Izmail.
Two F-18 aircraft of the Spanish Air Force were sent up to monitor the incoming attacks.
So were two F-16 Romanian Air Force warplanes.
