Former president Donald Trump is expected to announce his pick for a vice presidential running mate on the first day of the Republican National Convention.

The Republican National Convention's formal vote to nominate Mr Trump’s choice is expected on Monday evening.

Favourites for the vice presidential selection include Senator JD Vance of Ohio, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.

The former president was left shocked and bloodied after a bullet grazed his ear in an assassination attempt at the weekend during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Mr Vance, 39, has rallied support for Mr Trump in recent months.

The Yale-educated entrepreneur is behind the best-selling book Hillbilly Elegy, a memoir that followed his blue-collar upbringing in the "rust-belt" Midwest.

Mr Vance ran for the Senate in 2022 with Mr Trump's crucial endorsement.

He said recently: "I want to help him (Mr Trump) however I can.”

Florida senator Marco Rubio has worked closely with Mr Trump, endorsing him early on in this primary season.

He stood against Mr Trump to be the Republican candidate in 2016 where they clashed. However, they have built bridges since then.

He spoke at a rally for Trump in Florida on Tuesday and the presidential candidate said after: "He's very good... Marco was great last night, very popular. And he's certainly one of the people that we're looking at."

Meanwhile Doug Burgum, 67, is in his second term as governor of North Dakota. He has hit the campaign trail with his endorsement of Mr Trump.
