Amal and George Clooney’s charity has been banned in Russia as the pair have been slammed by President Putin for being ‘warriors of justice.’
George, 63, and his wife Amal, 46, set up the Clooney Foundation for Justice in 2016 to ‘gather evidence of mass human rights abuses, provide free legal support to victims and work to ensure that perpetrators are held to account.’
The non-governmental group has now been labelled as an ‘undesirable’ organisation by the Russian government who claim the Foundation has ‘under the guise of humanitarian ideas’ taken aim at Russia’s top leadership.
In a statement, Kremlin prosecutors said: ‘The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation has declared the activities of the foreign non-governmental organization Clooney Foundation for Justice, USA, to be undesirable on the territory of our country.’
The statement then added that Amal ‘considers’ herself a lawyer: ‘It was founded in New York by actor George Clooney and his wife, who considers herself an attorney in the field of international law.’
‘The Foundation carries out work aimed at discrediting Russia on a Hollywood scale.
‘It actively supports pseudo-patriots who have left the country, members of banned extremist associations and terrorist organizations.
‘Under the guise of humanitarian ideas, the “fighters for justice” from Madison Avenue promote initiatives for the criminal prosecution of Russia’s top leadership, and publicly disseminate negative pseudo-expert assessments of Russian legislation on foreign agents and NGOs.’
To be an ‘undesirable’ in Russia means they are prohibited from operating in Russia.
This term has been given to several charities since 2015 when a law was passed to allow the government to threaten groups that targeted Putin’s regime.
Clooney, 46, was criticised recently for her vocal advocacy when it came to Ukraine in their war with Russia but ‘hypocritically’ remaining silent on Palestine.
Since this criticism, Amal has revealed her secret work to prosecute Gaza war crimes.
The Hollywood icon, 63, and international human rights lawyer, 46, tied the knot on September 27, 2014, after they began dating a year earlier.
The couple shared a passionate public kiss earlier this month, showing that their romance is very much alive after almost ten years together.
