Viewers are outraged after Richard Madeley ‘defended’ Prince Andrew on Good Morning Britain.

Hosting the show alongside Charlotte Hawkins on August 26, Madeley, 68, spoke to Kwasi Kwarteng and Nells Abbey about the news of the day, eventually bringing up the subject of Prince Andrew’s involvement in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

The conversation was prompted by an image of the Duke of York’s Newsnight interview in 2019 with Emily Maitlis passing the first stage of the National Gallery’s acquisitions process.

Madeley asked his co-host and the panel members: ‘Is it time to lay off Prince Andrew?’

The host continued: ‘This photograph which was taken a few minutes after he wrapped his car crash interview with Emily Maitlis, saying, “Well that went rather well didn’t it?” Totally unaware of what he’d just done to his profile, his future, his reputation and everything.’

Madeley went on to say that National Portrait Gallery’s acquisition of the picture ‘seems to be rubbing his face in it.’

He then asked: ‘Is it time to cut the guy just a little bit of slack? Has he suffered enough?’

After Kwarteng pointed out that Prince Andrew has ‘hit rock bottom,’ Madeley said: ‘He’s a human being.’

Viewers online were quick to react to the moment, with many condemning Madeley for seemingly defending the Duke of York, with some even calling for him to be fired.

User @deanbegley1 went even farther, calling for Madeley to be removed from the program and calling him ‘rude and ignorant’ and writing, ‘he should be immediately sacked.’

Richard Madeley on @GMB –

“Is it time to cut Prince Andrew a little bit of slack”

I really think Madeley comes out with this stuff to negatively trend on here, there is no other reason for the BS he comes out with

The backlash comes after rumours that Prince Andrew is set to lose his security detail protecting him at his home on Windsor estate.

It’s been speculated for months now that King Charles is looking to remove Andrew from his home in Windsor, and the loss of his security detail seems to be another step towards that eviction.

Andrew’s security have been privately funded by Charles after he lost publicly-funded police protection in 2022.

Prince Andrew has been sidelined as a working royal since the Newsnight interview in 2019 about his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of sexual abuse.

He also settled a sexual assault case with a woman named Virginia Giuffre in 2022, paying her an estimated £12 million to settle the suit privately after she claimed she had been trafficked to have sex with him three times when she was 17 years old.

The Duke of York has repeatedly denied the allegations or having even met Ms Giuffre.
