South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have decided to leave Donald Trump behind.

The duo, who often have their fingers on the pulse with their outrageous and satirical animated sitcom, are skipping the upcoming 2024 US presidential election and Trump himself is a big reason for that decision.

‘We’ve tried to do South Park through four or five presidential elections, and it is such a hard thing to— it’s such a mind scramble, and it seems like it takes outsized importance,’ Matt told Vanity Fair.

‘Obviously, it’s f***ing important, but it kind of takes over everything and we just have less fun.’

Trey added: ‘I don’t know what more we could possibly say about Trump.’

He acknowledged that the delay for more episodes is also in part down to ‘waiting for Paramount to figure all their s**t out’, but Matt added that avoiding more episodes about Trump was ‘on purpose’.

Since Trump’s 2016 election victory, Mr Garrison has followed a similar path, although it’s become harder to keep up with real life.

‘[We] decided to just back off and let [politicians] do their comedy and we’ll do ours,’ the duo said back in 2017.

Now in its third decade, South Park continues to have its finger on the pulse, although the Book of Mormon creators enjoy embracing the silliness of the show.

‘It’s just way more fun to be like, Oh, Cartman’s going to dress up like a robot,’ admitted Matt in the new interview.

They’ll still tackle important issues, such as this year’s special exploring the Ozempic controversy which followed Trey’s own experiences with the drug.

He explained: ‘I got on it. I lost, like, 25 pounds, but I was, like, I hate this—I feel different. I feel like something’s different. Like, yes, I want to eat less, but I also want to do everything else less.’

The world of comedy has shifted dramatically since everyone was introduced to Kenny, Kyle, Carman and Stan back in 1997, and now Trey and Mark find themselves casting an eye towards comics on TikTok.
