Following the runaway success of Longlegs, a new independent horror has landed a dazzling 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

While Nicolas Cage terrified us as that movie’s grotesque seral killer in a tense thriller centred around cryptic clues and Satanism, Oddity follows blind occultist Darcy (Carolyn Bracken), who goes after those responsible for the brutal murder of her twin sister.

For her mission, she opts to use inherited haunted items – those that her sister Dani collected – as her tools of revenge.

The Irish paranormal horror, written and directed by Damian Mc Carthy, is released on Friday in the US after premiering at South by Southwest in March, where it scooped an audience award.

Oddity has managed to maintain a perfect 100% rating from critics on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes from 40 professional reactions so far.

This means that the overall sentiment for each piece about the independent flick is hugely positive, the same feat Longlegs managed.

Since its release, it has slipped down a little to a still very respectable 87% from 209 reviews.

Oddity, which also stars Bohemian Rhapsody actor Gwilym Lee, Tadhg Murphy and Caroline Menton, has been praised as ‘a ferociously entertaining, beautifully orchestrated thrill ride’ and ‘exceptionally chilling’.

‘One of the best horror movies of the year,’ declares Slashfilm in its review, while Daily Grindhouse argues that it’s ‘sly, scary, and impeccably crafted, and it confirms Damian Mc Carthy as one of the best filmmakers working in horror today’.

Mashable dubs the film ‘a rare treasure’ while Dread Central decided after its initial premiere that Oddity was poised to be ‘one of the scariest movies of the year’.

‘Oddity is genuinely and consistently unsettling,’ warns RogerEbert.com, while The Austin Chronicle enthuses: ‘Oddity is often a terrifying film because of its absurdist streak, not despite it, and Mc Carthy and his cast swing for the fences without ever once losing their balance.’

Filmmaker Mc Carthy acquired many of the film’s creepy props himself, as a frequent browser of antique shops.

However, one was specifically constructed – a life-size wooden mannequin.

‘I’m a big fan of those old ‘doll comes to life’ films – Chucky in Child’s Play, Creepshow – but they’re always small ,’ he told The Austin Chronicle.

‘I thought it would be cool to have one that’s your size, that would be a force to reckon with if it did come alive.’

Oddity will have its UK premiere on Friday August 16 at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Oddity is in US cinemas from Friday July 19. It is yet to receive a UK release date.
