People have a love/hate relationship with their hairdressers. While some are wedded to that one stylist who knows just how to get the look right, others prefer to try different options each time.

If you want to become a regular with a particular coiffeur though, it’s best to avoid annoying them – they are in charge of your head after all, and you don’t want to walk away with a wonky fridge or looking like a pencil a la Fleabag.

One hairdresser has shared a tip to customers to stay in your salon’s good books, revealing the one thing they do that grates on her.

On TikTok, Sarah, who goes by the name The Mobile Hairdressing Guru shared the sentence that really gets on her nerves: ‘My old hairdresser used to do my hair like this’.

The content creator said this type of comment can be counterproductive, as your current stylist might not know what exactly you mean or they may have a different skillset to offer.

When a client sits down in the chair and says this, Sarah said the initial thought is often a frustrated, ‘I’m not your old hairdresser’.

And in the comments, others agreed, including @simmo19683 who said: ‘For many people it’s scary going to a new hairdresser but I wish they would have faith in you.’

Instead, Sarah recommended a number of different ways to communicate the look you truly want that won’t offend or upset the person with the scissors.

Explaining the importance of visual cues, she said: ‘Rather than showing me how your old hairdresser used to do your hair, can you show me some images of what you’re hoping to achieve and I’ll see if they will work with your hair type/texture?’

The UK-based mobile hairdresser also had advice for hairdressers themselves, urging them not to get annoyed by the comment and to reply: “I appreciate you may be nervous about having your hair done by another hairdresser, but you are in safe hands”.

‘Reassure them and help to calm their nerves,’ she added.

What the content creator did admit, however, is that sometimes what customers want and what hairdressers can offer simply don’t always align.

‘The two of you just may not me a good match, it happens,’ she explained. ‘Do your best to offer the best possible outcome, and politely explain that you may not be a good fit for each other.’

Other hairdressers weighed in on the topic saying they approach it differently.

‘I normally ask what they liked about how they did it or I’ll explain why I do it differently,’ said @keeleythompson97, while @mariehall94 added: ‘If they liked it that way I would try to do it the way she wanted.’
