It’s not nice having to wait in a queue for ages, listening to dull tunes while you wait to chat to a customer service advisor.

But Sky customers are being warned to make sure they really are calling the right people, amid an alarming trend which is costing people huge amounts.

The broadband and entertainment provider has been the target of scammers, leaving those who call their customer service line forking out a whopping £10-a-minute while on the phone.

‘These scams operate by manipulating Google results or using deceptive ads to target people looking for Sky’s support,’ Sky said in a statement. ‘Once you dial these numbers, you’re hit with high charges.’

The broadcasting giant highlighted that this targets an already-afflicted group, as people are calling to get help after experiencing issues.

Sky continued: ‘This scheme exploits our customers’ need for assistance.

‘These fraudulent sites direct users to phone numbers that charge exorbitant rates – sometimes up to more than £10 per minute – posing as Sky customer service.’

It urged people to be vigilant when dialling, assuring members that premium-rate numbers are never used for customer support.

Sky recommended the best way to avoid getting ‘caught out’ with extra charges is to double-check phone numbers and always using its ‘official’ contact numbers provided on its website and via authorised communications.

Essentially, don’t look for the first thing you see on search, and be vigilant about third-party sites or information.

‘Our dedicated customer service team is available through verified channels to assist you and ensure your experience with Sky remains secure and positive,’ the company added.

Though Sky doesn’t charge premium rates for customer service, it explained that you can still incur a cost for certain communications.

For example, if you’re calling a Sky 03 customer helpline from a provider that’s not Sky Mobile or Sky Talk, you could face a charge depending on your package and location.
