Millions of voters across London are going to the polls to elect the new Government. The Standard is looking at key battleground seats in the capital. Here we turn the spotlight on:

TWICKENHAM

Estimated declaration time 4am

Candidates for main parties (in alphabetical order):

Tom Bruce - Labour

Jonathan Hulley - Conservative

Chantal Lyn Kerr-Sheppard - Green Party

Alexander Starling - Reform UK

Munira Wilson - Lib Dem

Summary: For more than 60 years, Twickenham was a safe Tory seat but became a marginal in the 1980s.

The constituency was won by Vince Cable in 1997 and he held it until 2015 when Conservative Dr Tania Mathias beat him as the Lib Dems were hit with a backlash for their coalition with the Tories.

By now knighted Sir Vince won it back at Theresa May’s June 2017 snap election, and Munira Wilson held it for the Lib Dems in 2019.

Area: The wards in the constituency are Fulwell & Hampton Hill, Hampton, Hampton North, Hampton Wick & South Teddington, Heathfield, South Twickenham, St Margarets & North Twickenham, Teddington, Twickeham Riverside, and West Twickenham

Boundary changes impact (Thrasher and Rallings analysis): Boundary changes have made little difference to this constituency. At the 2019 General Election, the result was 56.1 per cent Lib Dem, 34.2 per cent Conservative and 8.5 per cent Labour. The changes would have made it 56.2 per cent Lib Dem, 33.8 per cent Tory and 8.7 per cent Labour.

YouGov MRP poll prediction: Lib Dem hold

Evening Standard view: The Lib Dems will hold this seat unless something very unexpected happens
